Moxibustion uses controlled heat associated with burning moxa near selected areas. Because heat and smoke can present practical risks, it should be performed with appropriate ventilation, skin protection and professional supervision.

What to know before your visit

  • Tell the practitioner about reduced skin sensation, diabetes, circulation problems or allergies.
  • Do not tolerate excessive heat or burning discomfort.
  • Inform the clinic if you are sensitive to smoke.
  • Moxibustion is not suitable for every person or every condition; suitability should be assessed individually.

Care and suitability

TCM services are not one-size-fits-all. The practitioner may recommend a different approach, a combination of approaches, or conventional medical review depending on the information discussed and any safety concerns.

Urgent symptoms

For severe, sudden or rapidly worsening symptoms, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, major bleeding, stroke-like symptoms or other emergencies, call 995 or seek urgent conventional medical care.

What moxibustion involves

Moxibustion is a traditional TCM technique that uses heat generated from burning processed mugwort near selected areas of the body. It should be carried out with attention to distance, temperature, ventilation and individual suitability.

Heat means safety matters

Moxibustion is not appropriate over areas with reduced sensation, active skin problems, significant swelling or where heat could worsen an injury. Tell the practitioner about neuropathy, circulation problems, pregnancy and any condition that affects your ability to sense heat.

Not every person or symptom needs the same therapy

Moxibustion is one possible TCM modality, not a universal add-on. Suitability should be discussed after assessment. If symptoms are severe, unexplained or rapidly worsening, medical evaluation should come before complementary treatment.
