TCM pulse reading uses a traditional vocabulary

Practitioners may describe pulse qualities using terms translated as wiry, slippery, deep, floating, rapid or weak. These descriptions belong to TCM pattern assessment.

It is not the same as an ECG

Feeling the wrist cannot replace an electrocardiogram, blood-pressure measurement or medical assessment of an irregular heartbeat. Palpitations, fainting, chest pain or new breathlessness still require appropriate medical review.

Context changes the pulse

Exercise, anxiety, caffeine, fever, dehydration, medicines and normal variation can affect pulse rate and feel. A practitioner should interpret findings together with symptoms and history.

Traditional precision has limits

TCM pulse assessment can contribute to a practitioner’s treatment reasoning, but patients should be cautious about claims that a wrist pulse alone can identify a specific organ disease or accurately diagnose complex biomedical conditions.

Use both systems appropriately

Traditional assessment and conventional measurements can sit side by side when their roles are clear. If a pulse feels irregular or unexpectedly fast or slow, objective medical assessment may be important.
