  • TCM describes channels or meridians that connect named acupuncture points and organise traditional treatment strategies. They are not the same thing as nerves, blood vessels or lymphatic vessels in modern anatomy.
  • Acupuncture points are standardised locations used in acupuncture and related therapies. Modern research may study local nerves, connective tissue or physiological responses around some points, but that does not make the traditional meridian map identical to an anatomical system.
  • Practitioners may select local points near a symptom and distal points elsewhere on the body. The choice can depend on the traditional pattern, safety considerations and the person’s overall condition.

Meridians are part of the traditional map

TCM describes channels or meridians that connect named acupuncture points and organise traditional treatment strategies. They are not the same thing as nerves, blood vessels or lymphatic vessels in modern anatomy.

Acupoints are defined treatment locations

Acupuncture points are standardised locations used in acupuncture and related therapies. Modern research may study local nerves, connective tissue or physiological responses around some points, but that does not make the traditional meridian map identical to an anatomical system.

Point selection depends on the treatment plan

Practitioners may select local points near a symptom and distal points elsewhere on the body. The choice can depend on the traditional pattern, safety considerations and the person’s overall condition.

Safety matters more than the map

Needling depth and direction vary by body region. Proper hygiene, single-use sterile needles and knowledge of anatomy are important. Chest, neck, abdomen and other sensitive regions require particular care.

Symptoms still need diagnosis where appropriate

Numbness, weakness, severe swelling, fracture, infection, chest pain or neurological change should not be explained only in terms of blocked meridians. Appropriate medical assessment comes first when red flags are present.

This page provides general health and TCM education, not an individual diagnosis. Sudden, severe, persistent or rapidly worsening symptoms — especially emergency warning signs — require appropriate conventional medical assessment.
