At a glance
  • Persistent ED can be a reason to check cardiovascular and metabolic health.
  • Do not buy unknown “male enhancement” products online; ingredients may be unsafe or hidden.
  • Morning erections, libido, medication use and relationship context all provide useful clues.

Why this deserves attention

Difficulty getting or keeping an erection is common and can happen temporarily with stress, fatigue, alcohol or relationship difficulties. Persistent erectile dysfunction can also be associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, vascular disease, some medicines, low testosterone or other conditions. It should not automatically be treated as a masculinity failure.

What makes it more important

A medical review can include blood pressure, diabetes risk, lipid status and selected hormone tests when appropriate. Several commonly used medicines can affect sexual function, but they should not be stopped abruptly without discussing alternatives.

What to do next

Lifestyle improvements that support vascular health — exercise, smoking cessation, sleep, weight management and diabetes/blood-pressure control — can also support sexual health. Evidence-based ED medicines are available through proper medical assessment.

Where TCM may fit

TCM may be discussed as complementary care, but “kidney deficiency” should not be used as the only explanation for persistent ED. Herbal sexual-enhancement products deserve particular caution because adulteration and interactions can be dangerous.

When not to wait

Seek urgent care for chest pain or severe breathlessness during sexual activity, or for a painful erection lasting several hours. Otherwise, persistent ED deserves a non-urgent but proper health assessment.
