At a glance
  • DVT may cause swelling, pain, warmth or colour change in one leg, although some clots cause few symptoms.
  • Recent surgery, prolonged immobility, long journeys, pregnancy, cancer and previous clots can raise risk.
  • A pulmonary embolism can cause sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or coughing blood and may be life-threatening.

Why this deserves attention

A blood clot in a deep vein can travel to the lungs. New one-sided leg swelling, pain or warmth deserves medical assessment before massage, Tuina or self-treatment.

The same symptom can have several causes. Useful clues include how quickly it changed, how severe it is, what comes with it, personal risk factors and whether it is clearly different from your normal baseline.

What to observe

Notice whether swelling is one-sided, whether the calf or thigh is tender or warmer than the other side, and whether symptoms began after travel, surgery, bed rest or reduced movement.

Write down when symptoms happen, how long they last, triggers, changes in normal function and medicines or supplements already taken. A short record often makes a consultation more useful.

Sensible next steps

Do not repeatedly massage a newly swollen painful leg while deciding what it is. Arrange prompt medical assessment; ultrasound or other testing may be needed.

Medical assessment and where TCM fits

DVT and pulmonary embolism require conventional diagnosis and, when confirmed, anticoagulation or other medical treatment. Risk cannot be judged reliably from appearance alone.

TCM or Tuina may support unrelated stiffness later, but suspected acute DVT is not a situation for massage, cupping or acupuncture before medical clearance.

TCM and conventional care can sometimes complement each other, but acute red flags, conditions needing imaging or blood tests, and diseases with established evidence-based treatment require diagnosis and safety to come first.

When not to wait

Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, coughing blood or rapidly worsening swelling requires emergency assessment; call 995 in Singapore when severe or life-threatening.
